The renaissance belfry was built in the years 1574-1586. It was used as a guard and fire alarm tower. It is made from white sandstone, hence the name of the tower. [1, s. 24] The third biggest bell in the Czech Republic, Augustin, is a significant part of the structure. The bell was made in 1509. The White tower is the tallest building in the city (72m), and its gallery offers a spectacular view of Hradec Králové and the far away peaks of Krkonoše and Orlické hory. The tower is currently closed to the public due to reconstruction, which will last until the end of 2014. [81]
