celebration starts on December 31, the day which Czechs call “Silvestr”. It is typical for Czech students to celebrate this day at mountain cottages. The official ceremony in HK “The first day together” takes place on January 1 in the afternoon in the Old Square. It finishes with a fireworks display accompanied by music and supporting program. January 1st is associated with the saying "as on New Year’s Day, so will be the new year." For the Czech Republic this day has even more importance, it is a day of restoration of an independent Czech state, and the official split with Slovakia. [10]
